Shop Local: Garden Centres, Nurseries and Florists

Garden Centre

Whether you are making a big or a small purchase for the garden is it always nice to see things in person. One of the nicest things about visiting a local garden centre or nursery is the personalised, knowledgeable advice you are able to receive about the care of a plant, sometimes even from the person who propagated and grew the plant you are thinking about purchasing. You can get ideas for garden design, which flower colours go well together, and they are often very helpful separating the plants into sections, for example: shade loving, great for bees, highly scented and climbers.

Take a tour across The Malverns and you’ll find an assortment of garden centres specialising in different plants and flowers. We’ve also got plenty of florists in the area to purchase a lovely floral display for your loved one, a family member, friend or special event. Please see our list below. If you think we’ve missed somewhere, please let us know by email [email protected].

Wykeham Gardens in Leigh Sinton is one of those plant centres. They sell trees, shrubs, climbers, perennials, bulbs and annuals. They are able to sell a different range of plants from other garden centres as they grow the majority of their perennials in their own polytunnels. They propagate from seed, cuttings & division all year round. Reducing environmental impact is also very important to Wykeham Gardens; they are peat free and have moved to using taupe-coloured plastic pots which can be recycled. They pride themselves on giving friendly advice on garden or plant problems and even arrange to come out to visit you if need be.

As local nurseries tend to be smaller than the bigger garden centres some choose to specialise in a particular plant. Old Court Nurseries in Colwall has specialised in Michaelmas daisies since 1906 and now holds the Plant Heritage National Collection of over 430 varieties. Attached to the nursery is Picton Garden, a 1.5 acre garden which is full of unusual plants and each season brings a new look to the garden (admission charged for garden). Many of the plants seen in the garden can be purchased from the nursery and more than 90% of the plants for sale are propagated on site. Another nearby nursery that has a specialism is Caves Folly Nurseries also in Colwall. They specialise in organic plants for the wildlife friendly gardener and are one of only a handful of commercial producers of organically grown Perennial plants in the UK.

A fantastic local community organisation is Link Nurseries in Powick. It is a community-focused horticultural centre that provides therapeutic and vocational services and activities for people recovering from mental ill-health. It is linked with Pershore College and Bransford Trust. They sell a large range of bedding and herbaceous plants, alpines, shrubs and trees grown by students and clients. Link Nurseries also has a gardening club and offers a square foot of a garden to members.

Holloways in Suckley is a lovely place to visit whether you are looking for a special item or just a browse. It has a treasure trove of antique and vintage garden ornaments as this was the original specialism. Holloways also has a popular restaurant and now sells pots, modern garden ornaments, garden and conservatory furniture and has expanded to furniture, gifts and more.

Nuyard Country and Garden Centre is located on the A38 just outside Upton upon Severn, where you can purchase garden centre products; clothing and footwear; shrubs, plants and trees; paving and fencing as well as products for horses, livestock and pets.

We all know how important it is to shop local and support independent establishments, even more so now with the pandemic. We often get a much better service from independent shops and they introduce us to alternative products, local produce and unusual gifts. Independent shops help keep our high streets looking interesting and different from every other town or city and help keep so many local people in jobs and ultimately help the local communities. There are many independent shops across The Malverns and they would be greatly missed if they disappeared, so please try to ‘Support Our Local Shops’.
