Event Description
Exhibition at Malvern Library Gallery: 1 – 28 September 2023 (not open on Sundays)
This exhibition features a group of abstract paintings derived from photos of graffiti-covering patches of paint on walls. These colourful patchworks are assembled erasures, translating and reframing the work of environmental agencies/council employees. The artist points to one of the many social processes in which judgements are made concerning the value of forms of expression – in this case the work of graffiti producers.
Andrew Smith is an artist based in Birmingham. He works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and writing – with the translation of images and ideas between different media being a key feature of his output. Some of his work is produced under the pseudonym HR Smoke. He has exhibited widely in the West Midlands. He has an MA in Fine Art (double distinction) from BCU. He is also a musician, recording under the name HR Smoke.
