Rail Trails Worcestershire www.wcrp.org.uk/rail-trails/ is a new 100 mile walking trail that’s been developed by our walk leader. It uses the most scenic paths to link the County’s mainline stations. Last year a three-day walk was offered following the Cotswold line to Evesham. This year we’re heading north over three days on the ‘Salt Line’ to Bromsgrove.
The first stage (11 miles), on Monday 27 May, is Great Malvern to Foregate Street. After exploring Malverns’s ‘hidden’ paths we head over Madresfield Park and Old Hills to Powick and its historic links with the Civil War. The final section is along the River Severn into Worcester’s historic heart.
On the second day (8 miles) Tuesday 28 May, we travel by train from Great Malvern to Foregate Street. We leave Worcester City Centre on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. We then pass through Perdiswell Park to skirt Fernhill Heath with views west to the Abberley Hills. The quiet and scenic Droitwich Canal is then followed for the final stretch to Droitwich.
On the final day (8 miles) Wednesday 29 May, we take the train to Droitwich and again use quiet towpaths. The Droitwich Canal is followed to its junction with the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. Passing through open countryside, we leave the canal at the bottom of the longest flight of locks in the UK to head over fields to Bromsgrove station and the return train to Malvern.
No steep sections and very few stiles
Please bring a packed lunch, snacks and plenty to drink.
