We’ve named this walk The William Whiting Way in memory of William, who for many years led walks for the Festival, but who sadly died in 2023.
This was one of his walks.
It starts with a short train journey from Colwall to Ledbury.
From Ledbury station, we pass through the attractive Herefordshire town of Ledbury with its 17th century market hall, originally a grain store and church. Then through woods and along field tracks to reach Eastnor Church. From here the walk takes us through Eastnor Park and steeply uphill to a 90ft Obelisk, a monument erected by the local Somers family. We now start the gradual ascent of Hangmans Hill and follow the ridge to the 2nd century BC iron-age fort on the Herefordshire Beacon. This is the highest point of the walk at 1100 feet where, on a clear day, there are splendid views over The Cotswolds, The Clee Hills in Shropshire and towards the Bristol Channel. We descend to the British Camp car park where there are refreshments and toilets. A short steep descent takes us to the attractive hamlet of Evendine. From here field paths take us back to Colwall Station.
Total ascent 1700 feet. Some paths are uneven and steep. About six stiles so much of the walk is stile free. Apart from the Herefordshire Beacon which is popular with walkers, we are walking in more remote countryside in rural Herefordshire.
Packed lunch and drinks required. Walking boots needed on this walk, given steep and sometimes uneven paths.
